In today’s world, crime rates are rising in many countries. The main causes of this trend are unemployment and the influence of violent TV content. However, these issues can be addressed by regulating media content and increasing job opportunities.
One major cause of rising crime is the portrayal of violence in the media. Many teenagers are exposed to violent scenes on television and begin to consider such behavior normal. As a result, they may imitate what they see in movies or drama series, eventually engaging in unlawful activities. In addition, unemployment is a significant contributor to crime. When individuals, especially the youth, are unable to find jobs, they often fall into poverty. This financial desperation can lead them to commit crimes such as theft or shoplifting in order to meet daily needs. For example, in 2009, India saw a sharp rise in its crime rate. A study conducted by the Crime Bureau revealed that unemployment was a major contributing factor.
To reduce crimes linked to media violence, governments should implement strict regulations to filter harmful content before it is aired. Media companies must follow guidelines that discourage the production of violent content. Additionally, increasing employment opportunities is crucial to combat poverty-driven crime. For instance, Japan has reported extremely low crime rates over the last four decades. During a workshop on behavior change, Japanese officials explained that one key reason behind this was the continuous effort to generate more jobs at the community level.
In conclusion, rising crime rates are largely driven by the influence of violent media and widespread unemployment. Governments should monitor and regulate media content and create more job opportunities to reduce crime and improve public safety.
