Kind of things people buy online

Read the sample IELTS speaking part 3 answer on the topic of the kinds of things people buy online. By reading this sample answer, you can get some ideas about different questions that will help you in the actual exam.

1. What kinds of things do people in your country often buy from online shops?

In my country, people usually buy clothes, electronics, and household items from online shops. Recently, there’s also been a big rise in online grocery shopping, especially after the pandemic. Many young people also like ordering fashion accessories and beauty products because they can easily compare different brands and prices online.

2. Why do you think online shopping has become so popular nowadays?

I think it has become popular mainly because of convenience. People can shop anytime without leaving their homes, which saves a lot of time and effort. On top of that, online platforms often offer discounts and promotions that are not available in physical stores. Another reason is the wide variety of options—online shops usually stock more products than traditional shops.

3. What are some possible disadvantages of buying things from online shops?

Well, one clear disadvantage is that you can’t physically check the product before buying, so sometimes the item may not match the description. Delivery delays are also a common problem, especially if the product is shipped from abroad. And of course, there’s always the risk of scams or poor-quality goods, which makes some people feel insecure about online payments.

4. Why do many people today keep buying things which they do not need?

That’s a really interesting question. I think one reason is aggressive advertising—people are constantly exposed to pop-ups, emails, and flashy promotions, which tempt them to spend more. Another reason is the rise of a “buy now, think later” mentality, especially with easy payment options like cash on delivery or installment plans. For some, shopping has also become a way of coping with stress or boredom, so they end up purchasing items they don’t actually use.
