Read the sample IELTS speaking part 3 answer on the topic: Can you suggest why many students decide to study law at university? By reading this sample answer, you can get some ideas about different questions that will help you in the actual exam.
1. Can you suggest why many students decide to study law at university?
Well, I think many students choose to study law because it’s seen as a respected and stable profession that offers a lot of opportunities. In my country, lawyers are often viewed as educated and influential people, so there’s a sense of prestige attached to it. Some students also find the subject intellectually stimulating — they enjoy debating, solving problems, and learning about justice. And of course, the potential for a good income is another big motivation.
2. What are the key personal qualities needed to be a successful lawyer?
To be a great lawyer, I think you need to have excellent communication skills and critical thinking. You must be able to explain complex ideas clearly and stay calm under pressure. Being patient and detail-oriented is also important because even a small mistake can affect a case. I’d also say empathy matters too — understanding your client’s emotions helps you represent them better, not just legally but personally as well.
3. Do you agree that working in the legal profession is very stressful?
Yes, absolutely. The legal field can be extremely stressful because lawyers often deal with tight deadlines, long hours, and a lot of responsibility. They have to prepare cases carefully and face tough competition. Sometimes they even handle emotionally heavy issues like criminal cases or family disputes, which can be mentally exhausting. However, many lawyers find the work rewarding because they’re helping others and fighting for justice.
4. Do you think the role of lawyers will change in the future?
That’s an interesting question. I believe it will change quite a lot with the advancement of technology. For example, artificial intelligence can already help with research and document review, so lawyers might rely more on digital tools in the future. But I don’t think technology will ever replace lawyers completely because human judgment, persuasion, and empathy can’t be automated. The role might evolve — perhaps lawyers will focus more on negotiation and creative problem-solving rather than paperwork.
