Learning swimming as a child

Read the sample IELTS speaking part 1 answer on the topic of learning to swim when you were a child. By reading this sample answer, you can get some ideas about different questions that will help you in the actual exam.

1. Did you learn to swim when you were a child?

Yes, I actually learned to swim when I was around seven years old. My parents thought it was an important life skill, so they enrolled me in swimming lessons at a nearby sports complex. At first, I was a bit nervous, but over time I gained confidence and really started to enjoy it.

2. How often do you go swimming now?

To be honest, I don’t go swimming very often these days, maybe once every couple of months. The main reason is that my schedule is quite packed with work and other commitments. However, whenever I do get the chance, I find it refreshing and a great way to relieve stress.

3. What places are there for swimming where you live?

In my city, there are several options. We have a couple of public indoor pools, some private sports clubs with larger facilities, and even a small water park. These places exist mainly because people see swimming as both a recreational activity and a form of exercise, so there’s always demand for them.

4. Do you think it would be more enjoyable to go swimming outdoors or at an indoor pool?

I think swimming outdoors is more enjoyable, especially in the summer, because you can enjoy the sunshine and fresh air at the same time. That being said, indoor pools are more practical in colder months or when the weather is unpredictable. So I guess it depends on the season and the purpose—whether it’s for fun or serious training.
