Read the sample IELTS speaking part 1 answer on the topic of Do you have a favourite café? By reading this sample answer, you can get some ideas about different questions that will help you in the actual exam.
1. Do you have a favourite café?
Yes, I do. There’s a cozy café near my house called Coffee Corner, and it has become my go-to place whenever I want a break from my routine. I love it because the coffee is always fresh, and they serve amazing pastries as well. The interior is decorated with warm lights and wooden furniture, which makes the whole environment feel welcoming. It’s also not too crowded, so I can actually sit and enjoy some quiet time.
2. Do you often go to cafés by yourself?
Yes, quite often. Going alone gives me a chance to clear my mind and just focus on myself for a while. Sometimes I bring my laptop to finish some work or watch videos, and other times I just sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy the background music. I think it’s a nice escape from a busy schedule, and it’s easier to find a seat when I’m alone!
3. What do you think helps to make a café very popular?
I think several factors play a role. First of all, the quality of the coffee and food must be good, because that’s what people come for. But apart from that, the atmosphere matters a lot — comfortable seating, clean tables, and good music can make customers want to stay longer. Free Wi-Fi and friendly staff also help a café become a favorite spot.
4. Why do some people prefer cafés that are part of large chains, rather than small, local cafés?
I think it’s mainly because big chains feel more reliable. No matter which branch you visit, the drinks usually taste the same, so there’s a sense of familiarity. Many chains also offer discounts, membership cards, and seasonal drinks, which attract a lot of customers. On top of that, they often have more space and longer opening hours, which is convenient for students and workers. Small cafés may be unique, but people sometimes choose chains just to play it safe.
