Band 7 Sample Answer

(i) How much walking do you do in your daily life?

In my daily life, I try to do a lot of walking. This is because walking helps me to stay physically healthy; otherwise, I gain weight quickly. Moreover, when I go for a morning walk, I can also socialize with different people, which relieves stress as I discuss my problems with them.

(ii) Did you walk more when you were at school than now?

Absolutely! During my school days, I had more time. I would come back from school at 2 pm, and then just before sunset, I would go for a walk. However, these days, I am too busy in my life due to my strenuous work routine and family.

(iii) What places are there to go for a walk near where you live?

There are many locations in my area where people can go for a walk. Firstly, we have a garden located in the center of the city, where old people come for a walk on a daily basis. Then, we have a sports complex, where a jogging track is available, and we also have a gym which has an outdoor running court.

(iv) Would you ever like to go on a walking holiday?

This is one of the things that is at the top of my to-do list. I have planned a walking holiday this summer with my friends. We are going to a remote area where a track is available for walking. Even the campsite is so far inside the area from the main road that I think we would have to walk for around 20 kilometers.

Band score analysis:

The candidate has achieved 7 bands in this because there is good topic development with valid reasons, except in question 1, where the student has not answered the main part of the question [how much], they should have mentioned a frequency. The candidate has also organised their answers logically using linking words with task-appropriate vocabulary. Then, there is no fluency issue either.

Band 8 Sample Answer

(i) How much walking do you do in your daily life?

I love walking every day due to multiple reasons. Firstly, I believe that my physical strength increases if I do a light walk on a daily basis. Then, it gives a fresh start to the day if I go on a morning walk, so I do not feel lethargic throughout the day. Therefore, I go for a walk twice during the day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

(ii) Did you walk more when you were at school than now?

Let me think… If I can recall clearly, I remember that I used to go for a walk every day with my father in the morning. We would talk about a lot of things during it, and he kind of motivated me to go to school everyday by this. However, these days, my work life has made it very difficult for me to walk even once a day.

(iii) What places are there to go for a walk near where you live?

There is a dearth of places in my city where people can go for a walk. There was a beautiful garden in my city with a walking track, where people used to go. However, it has been ruined now due to the carelessness of the local city council. Though people have complained about it many times, they seem unmoved by it.

(iv) Would you ever like to go on a walking holiday?

It would be an amazing experience if I could go on a walking holiday. It provides a chance to socialize with people of all walks of life. But there is one issue my work. It does not allow me to go anywhere; sometimes I think about leaving my job due to this sole reason.

Band score analysis:

It is a band 8 sample answer because the student has fulfilled all the criteria of achieving such a score in speaking. The student has used idiomatic language [all walks of life], there are no fluency fillers in the answer. Then, some uncommon words are used as well, such as lethargic, carelessness, dearth, and motivated. Finally, the use of linking words is natural as well.
