1- What is the IELTS General Training Test

IELTS General Training is required to meet the requirements stated by the Canadian Immigration Department to immigrate to Canada or apply for PR. Generally, most of the candidates need 8,7,7,7 in IELTS GT to successfully complete their immigration.

The IELTS GT has four modules:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

In terms of exam structure, it is slightly different than Academic IELTS, which we have to take for Canadian Study Visa (SDS or Non-SDS).

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training

These are key differences between IELTS GT and IELTS Academic:

  • Second Difference: In the IELTS General Training Reading module, we have five short passages instead of three long passages as in the Academic IELTS.

2- How to prepare for IELTS GT to achieve 8,7,7,7

To successfully pass the IELTS General Training test with your desired score, the first step is to develop a proper study plan and then prepare accordingly. You can follow this study plan:

(i) IELTS GT 1 Month Study Plan to Get 8,7,7,7 for C1-Level Speakers

This study plan is created for students who already have a C1-Level of English. They can achieve 8,7,7,7 score within a month due to their higher command of the language. These candidates do not need to review the grammar rules and usage of nouns, adjectives, and adverbs; they already have expertise in the basic English language. Therefore, their preparation plan would mainly focus on the content of the IELTS exam.

  • Week 1: Listening, Reading & Writing

In this week, your main focus must be on these three modules (Listening, Reading, and Writing). Firstly, you should learn what type of questions we have in each of them by clicking on the buttons below.

Once you know about each question type, you should find out how to solve them using different strategies and tips, then practice solving them, focusing on your mistakes as you move from one question to another.

After you have learnt about individual question types, you should solve a full-length IELTS General Training Practice Test and get familiar with exam conditions.

For the writing module, learn about different grammatical structures (Compound, Compound-Complex, and Conditional) you will have to use in the IELTS Writing to get 7 Bands. We will discuss their importance in later sections.

  • Week 2: Writing and Speaking

IELTS speaking has three main parts during which examiners ask us questions on different topics. For each topic, you should have a range of ideas to answer the questions fluently. Kirran Makkar’s book for speaking is quite helpful for this purpose.

With the rise of AI in language learning, many students have started using it for speaking and writing. AI can help us evaluate the grammar and vocabulary in our speaking and writing responses, though it cannot help us with task response, fluency, and pronunciation. That’s why it is recommended to practice the Speaking and Writing module with a tutor to get higher scores. Without a tutor, it isn’t easy to prepare for these two modules.

Our IELTS writing practice tests offer AI + Expert human feedback for better score depictions and improvements.

  • Week 3 and 4: Practice all modules together

In the last two weeks, you should practice all four modules together like an actual exam. Practically, you should solve one full-length mock test daily until your exam date. This will help you to get used to exam conditions and how to answer questions with full concentration within the time limit.

(ii) IELTS GT 2 Months Study Plan for students with B1-C1 Level in English:

Students with B1-C1 level in English struggle when it comes to preparing for IELTS GT and achieve 8,7,7,7. These students make mistakes in grammar, vocabulary, and cohesion or organisation of the sentences.

IELTS tests our skills in individual aspects of the English language. Therefore, we have designed an in-depth study plan for learners with an intermediate level of English.

  • Week 1: Learn English Grammar

This week’s main focus will be on English grammar. You should learn the rules for each aspect of the grammar and practice as well. For practice, you can ask ChatGPT to generate exercises for you, or there are plenty of them available on the internet as well.

  • Week 2: Improve your vocabulary

Your next step should be to improve your vocabulary, not just by memorizing a list of 1000 words. In fact, you need a more holistic approach. According to the British Council, once you have learned a word, you should put it to use (make sentences) and revise it regularly. This way, you won’t forget the words you learned two days ago.

In my experience, you should learn 20 words per day, make five sentences from each word, and then revise them the next day. For this purpose, you can use this link to improve your vocabulary. It’s authentic and more practical as it is made by IDP.

  • Week 3 and 4: Practice IELTS Listening & Reading

During these two weeks, your main focus must be on learning the different question types of the IELTS Listening and Reading module.

Once you know about individual question types, you should practice both modules every day and work on your mistakes for improvement.

  • Week 5 and 6: Practice IELTS Speaking and Writing Module:

In Weeks 5 and 6, your main goal should be to understand how the writing and speaking module works. Find out the different topics that we come across in the speaking module and read their sample answers. Similarly, you should know how you have to write the letter and essay in Task 2.

  • Week 7-8: Solve full-length mock tests every day:

You must do a timed practice in the last two weeks, so you can find out how to manage stress in the exam. Further, you will find out how to manage your time in each module and finish the exam on time. Solving full-length mock tests is a must for achieving a good score to increase your chances of immigration.

(iii) Strategies for 8 Bands in Listening

Achieving 8 bands in IELTS listening can be a daunting task if you do not follow the right guidelines and strategies to deal with each question type. Below are some of the strategies and mistakes you need to avoid if you want to get 8 bands.

1- Learn the IELTS Listening pattern:

IELTS listening has four parts, with each having a different type of conversation. In total, you would have to solve 40 questions by listening to the recording for 30 minutes.

2- Strategies to score 8 in listening:

Follow the question instructions given with each question type. For example, in some questions, they ask us to write one word only; in this case, you cannot write two words, otherwise it will be marked incorrect. Similarly, we have to write one word and/or a number only, no more than two words and no more than three words. Beware of this wording and write answers accordingly.

Write answers with the first letter capital due to the fact that we have to write words in the answers that are sometimes proper nouns like Rome, Simone, and Toronto. These nouns must be written with the first letter capital, else considered wrong.

The answers must be correct spelling-wise. Most students make typing errors while writing on a computer, which reduces their scores. Moreover, you need to be careful with singular and plurals.

Listen more and read less: Listening is obviously about finding answers by listening to the recording. But many students are focused on reading the questions even when the questions are being discussed in the recording. You need to use the time given before the recording starts effectively. In that time, you should read all the questions quickly and memorize them. You will be provided with a paper on which you can take notes as well in this time.

In multiple-choice questions, there will be two options that are irrelevant to the main question statement, and they are mostly incorrect answers. Therefore, you should read the question carefully and understand what is being mentioned or asked in it. Then find the options that are relevant to your question, and this would be the correct choice as well.

Memorize the given information as much as you can. This will help you to focus on the recording rather than the paper and prevent any misunderstandings. Also, this would avoid the habit of missing the questions or answers in the recording.

3- Mistakes you must avoid while practicing IELTS listening

Many students practice two or more mock tests every day, and never redo the incorrect questions in their previous test. This is a wrong strategy; you must solve wrong questions at the end of each test to find out your mistakes and work on them.

(iv) Tips to achieve band 7 in writing

Most students get stuck at band 6.5 in writing, and no matter what they do, they are unable to raise their scores. This is mainly because they do not know what the examiner needs in a band 7 essay. Here are some of the tips that you can use to get 7 bands in IELTS writing module.

1- IELTS Writing Module pattern:

You will have to complete two types of tasks in IELTS GT writing module. Task 1 is letter writing, and task 2 will be an essay on different topics. You are expected to write 150 words in task 1 and 250 words in task 2 within 60 minutes in total.

2- IELTS Writing Band 7 techniques:

One of the major mistakes that students make in IELTS writing is in the task response. You need to avoid jumping from one idea to another. For example, if you are talking about ‘the role of bees in pollination’, then you must explain it first. Like, ‘why bees are needed for pollination’, ‘how they perform pollination’, and ‘what pollination is’. Before you move to the next idea, ‘what would happen if bees went extinct’, you should answer those questions first.

It is important that we show a range of grammar in responses. Writing the whole response in simple sentences limits our score to 6.5 bands. Therefore, you need to use complex, compound and conditional sentences.

Write accurately and always make sure that you have a good typing speed; finish your answer within the time limit without making spelling mistakes. You can also take the writing module on paper now with all other modules on computer.

You must have heard on different blogs and YouTube channels that for band 7 in writing, we must fill the whole essay with advanced words. However, that’s not important. What’s important is that you write using common words (with some advanced ones), and totally avoid repeating the same words.

Finally, we have one major piece of advice given by many IELTS tutors is to use linking words. This is fine, but for band 7 in the IELTS writing module, we must use substitution and referencing as well along with linking words.

3- Mistakes to avoid:

In the IELTS writing module, you must utilize the time effectively. Always spend some time on planning (2 minutes in task 1, and 5 minutes in task 2) during which you should write important points you will write about in your response – never start writing immediately, always plan first. Then you should start writing the task and have 5 minutes spare at the end for proofreading to omit any grammar, task response, and vocabulary (spelling) issues.

(v) IELTS Speaking Band 7 Tips:

Getting band 7 in speaking is not that difficult compared to other modules. If you practice daily using the techniques mentioned below, then you will easily achieve your desired score in this module:

1- Learn the structure of the IELTS speaking exam:

IELTS speaking has mainly three parts. Part 1 is a basic interview type, with a cue card in Part 2, and Part 3 is a discussion type. In each part, the examiner will ask us questions on various topics such as food, health, transport, pollution, social media, and many more.

2- Band 7 speaking strategies:

Never give short answers in Part 1 and Part 3. In both parts, your every answer must be 4 to 5 sentences. If we give short answers, it will affect our score in vocabulary and grammar, as we will be unable to show a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures, which is highly important for Band 7 in speaking.

Use idioms, they are very important to show a range of vocabulary in our speaking responses. But make sure that you do not overuse them. One or two correctly used idioms in the whole speaking test is better than adding an idiom in each answer.

Use linking words to organise your reasons so that your fluency improves as well, and there is a development of topic or answer. Better organised answers make it easier for the listener to understand our point of view.

You should never repeat the same words again and again in your answers. For higher bands in vocabulary, we must avoid repetition of words; it increases our score in fluency as well.

3- Never make this mistake:

Many candidates start memorising the answers or vocabulary on different topics thinking that it might help them in the real exam in some way, but this must be totally avoided, as examiners decrease the scores once they know that your responses are not natural or memorised.

(vi) Tips to get band 7 in IELTS GT Reading module:

The question types in the IELTS GT reading module are easier than the academic ones. However, the marking criteria is different, which makes it harder for candidates to achieve 7 bands in it. The following are the techniques that will help you get 7 bands in this module on your first attempt:

1- IELTS GT Reading Pattern:

In the IELTS General Training reading exam, we have five short passages or texts to read and find the answers to related questions. You will have 60 minutes for this.

2- IELTS GT Reading Band 7 Tips:

Each question needs a specific tip to solve it. Therefore, you must learn them first and practice accordingly.

Keep an eye on the time as you solve each question. Use the skim and scan technique to read the passage quickly and find answers within a time limit.

Some questions are always in an order, like multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and True, False, and Not Given. Try to find any one of these three types of questions; once you know where a certain question is, you will know where other questions could be.

Write answers carefully, as spelling mistakes can decrease your score. To avoid this, you can copy/paste your answers as well.

Most importantly, practice daily and always evaluate your incorrect questions to analyse your mistakes. Once you know your mistakes, then search for different methods to solve them; this will raise your scores.

3- How to book your IELTS GT exam:

You can book your exam through IDP or the British Council. The booking system is quite simple. First, choose the IELTS GT exam, then select a test date from the available test dates, and pay the fee for booking confirmation. We receive payment confirmation within 5 working days. If there is any delay, you should contact your testing center immediately. In Canada, test centers are available in various cities. Visit this link to find a testing center in your city.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the minimum IELTS score required for Canadian PR?

Most Canadian immigration programs, including Express Entry (FSW, CEC, FST), require a minimum of CLB 7. In IELTS General Training, this usually means 6.0 in each skill. However, to be competitive, candidates aim for CLB 9 (8,7,7,7), which greatly increases CRS points and chances of selection.

2. Which IELTS test is required for Canadian PR: Academic or General Training?

For immigration and PR, Canada requires the IELTS General Training Test. The IELTS Academic Test is mainly required for study visas (SDS/Non-SDS programs) and not for PR.

3. Can I book the IELTS General Training exam in Canada online?

You can book your exam through the official IDP IELTS Canada website or the British Council (depending on test availability in your city). You can choose between computer-based IELTS or paper-based IELTS.

4. How long does it take to prepare for IELTS General Training?

On average, candidates need 4–6 weeks of focused preparation if their English is already intermediate. Beginners may need 2–3 months of consistent practice to achieve the required score.

5. Can I combine scores from two different IELTS tests for Canada PR?

No. IRCC does not accept combined scores from multiple test sittings. You must achieve your required scores in a single IELTS test. Each module score must come from one Test Report Form (TRF). If you score higher in some modules on one test and higher in others on a second test, you cannot mix them.

6. Which English test is best for Canada PR — IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE?

All three are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry. IELTS General Training is the most widely recognized and has the most preparation resources. CELPIP is fully computer-based and uses North American English. PTE Core is newer but equally valid. Choose based on your comfort with the test format and availability in your city.
