Children studying different subjects

Read the sample essay on the topic: whether children should only study subjects related to a qualification or additional subjects as well. Learn how to write a high-scoring IELTS essay using correct guidelines and structure.

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

There are differing opinions on whether university students should focus solely on their major courses or explore other subjects alongside them. While in-depth study of a particular subject equips students with specialized knowledge, I believe that learning from other disciplines enhances employment opportunities and broadens intellectual horizons.

On the one hand, focusing exclusively on core subjects helps students become experts in their chosen fields. Concentrating only on the major allows for deeper understanding and mastery of the subject. For instance, students in healthcare programs like MBBS, Pharmacy, or Physiotherapy follow a highly structured curriculum that includes only medical-related courses. This helps them build a strong foundation and prepare for demanding professional roles in the future. Excluding non-relevant subjects gives them more time and focus to develop clinical and theoretical knowledge in their area of specialization.

On the other hand, exploring additional subjects can be extremely beneficial, especially when job opportunities in a specific field are limited. These additional subjects help children to gain a wide range of skills, which offer students a competitive edge in a wider job market. For example, a friend of mine who graduated in software engineering couldn’t find a job in his field. However, because he had studied marketing and mathematics as electives, he was able to secure a position in accounting.

In my view, acquiring knowledge from various disciplines enhances critical thinking, adaptability, and overall employability. It not only opens up alternative career paths but also helps students become more well-rounded individuals.

In conclusion, while focusing on one’s major can lead to expertise, learning additional subjects provides flexibility and greater job prospects. Therefore, universities should encourage students to take interdisciplinary courses for a more balanced education.
