Read the sample IELTS speaking part 2 answer on the topic of an interesting TV documentary. By reading this sample answer, you can get some ideas about different questions that will help you in the actual exam.
Describe a TV documentary you watched that was particularly interesting.
- what the documentary was about
- why you decided to watch it
- what you learnt during the documentary
Last week, I watched a documentary about the gold rush in Alaska. This documentary is basically about the discovery of Gold for the first time in Canada. Gold was something people did not even know about back then, until one person washed some dirt from the river in the Alaskan region. Moreover, this documentary revealed that the Gold Rush provided jobs to thousands of people in the region, and it brought prosperity as well.
The reason I watched this documentary was that I was interested in knowing how Gold is mined. I always thought that it is an easy process and does not take too much time or money. However, the reality was quite opposite. Miners have to spend days just to find a few grams of gold, and the investors continuously need to buy new equipment for mining, which was really expensive back then.
I learnt some pretty interesting facts about gold mining. I came to know that during gold mining, a small amount of copper and other minerals are also discovered, but their selling price is lower than that of gold. Furthermore, another interesting fact about the gold rush was that due to this campaign, many people got wealthy and they built fortunes.
Tip for IELTS Speaking Part 2:
Some students struggle to speak for 1 to 2 minutes in this part of the speaking test. They are unable to give an extended answer and stop in the middle.
This reduces their score because the examiner wants them to speak for a minimum of 1 minute.
To speak easily for 2 minutes on the given topic of the cue card in IELTS speaking, follow these two tips:
1. Give a general sentence at the start:
At the beginning of your answer, you should add a general sentence related to the question given in the cue card.
For example, if the cue card question is, “Describe a book you read recently”.
The general sentence could be like, “Although I have read many books in my life, today I will talk about one book that I read last week. The name of the book is ‘War and Peace’ written by Leo Tolstoy”
By adding such a general sentence at the start, you will be able to build a story and speak easily.
2. Use the time given at the start effectively:
Some students just think about what to say in the cue card in their mind; this is wrong.
We should take down some notes or write key points related to the question. Then you will be able to speak longer and fluently.
