Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
Some people believe that an older population is difficult to manage, while others argue that it brings value to communities. Having more senior citizens helps preserve experience and adds diversity to society. However, it also puts a significant strain on public healthcare systems. In my opinion, although there are some drawbacks, the advantages of an ageing population outweigh the disadvantages.
One of the main advantages of having more elderly people in a community is the wealth of knowledge and experience they bring—knowledge gained through years of personal and professional life. When shared, this experience can benefit others. For example, there is a local community centre in my city where elderly people often gather to share advice and insights, which help others deal with issues related to education and business.
In addition, older individuals can contribute to job creation within society. Many retirees use their savings or pensions to start small businesses and, in doing so, create employment opportunities. For instance, Dr. Ahmed Ali, a retired government employee in my city, opened a secondary care hospital in his local community after retirement, where he hired local residents to work in various support roles.
However, one significant disadvantage is the cost of healthcare for the ageing population. Older individuals often require frequent medical attention and long-term care, which puts a heavy financial burden on public health systems. For example, in Pakistan, the government spends nearly ten billion rupees annually on healthcare for the elderly, which accounts for around 60% of the total health budget.
In conclusion, while elderly people contribute positively to society through knowledge-sharing and job creation, their presence can place pressure on national healthcare systems. Nevertheless, I believe that the advantages of an ageing population clearly outweigh the disadvantages.
