[Frequently Asked Questions]

1- Decide what test format you will take:

IELTS exam can be taken online at home or in the exam center (paper-based and computer-based). In Canada, online IELTS tests are hardly offered by any test center. Therefore, you have to decide if you want to take a computer-based or paper-based exam. To help you learn the difference between them, read our blog on this topic by clicking the button below.

2. IELTS Exam Booking via IDP: Visit the IDP website, select the test date and time

Each test center has different dates available. When you select a test center and choose the test type, a number of dates will be available.

Some test centers allow IELTS Candidates to take the written exam on one day and speaking on another day, and even at different times on the same day.

We advise you to take your speaking test at least 2-3 days before your written exam of the listening, reading, and writing module. This way, you will be able to break down your preparation plan and get better scores.

4. IELTS General Training Paper-Based Booking:

IDP does not offer paper-based exam booking anymore in any test type, either academic or general training. They have totally shifted towards computerised exams in Canada and many other countries as well.

This change happened in the last 2 months (since March 2026), mainly due to the fact that they want to cut their operational costs to be more self-sufficient. Also, it allowed them to provide results quicker within 1-5 days, compared to a paper-based exam that used to take a minimum of 13 days.

However, after taking thousands of exams, IDP has realised that some candidates are not comfortable writing on a computer, which significantly decreases their performance, either due to slow typing speed or spelling mistakes. To tackle this, now, according to the new IDP rules, you can take all modules on a computer with writing on paper. Click on the button below to read more about this.

4. Fill in the exam application form:

The next step is to fill out the IELTS registration form. Make sure that all the information you are providing is correct. Spelling mistakes must not be made in any case, as it is difficult to make changes once the exam has been booked.

Moreover, IELTS test registration in Canada is quite straightforward, and you will need a passport to complete your IELTS registration. Also, make sure that the passport is not expired, otherwise you will not be allowed to sit in the exam.

5. Pay the IELTS test fees and wait for the confirmation email:

The final step is to pay your IELTS booking fees. Currently, the IELTS computer-based exam costs around $379 CAD (last verified 17 June 2026) in general, though you may find IELTS exam prices between $320 and $340 as well on some websites; remember that IELTS test price is before tax.

You can pay your fees using your Visa and MasterCard. Please make sure that your card allows online purchases; otherwise, the banking system will not allow you to pay your fees.

Once you have paid the IELTS exam booking fees, you should wait for the exam booking confirmation email, which usually takes 1 to 5 working days.

6. Start your preparation now, and best of luck:

Now that you have booked your test, it is time to start your preparation.

Step 1: Gather IELTS preparation resources:

Since you will be taking the computer-based IELTS GT, it is advised not to practice from the physical books. You should use the tests provided by IDP when we book the test or the free tests available on our website.

Step 2: Make a study plan and practice daily

According to the time you have till your exam, divide each module accordingly. Give equal time to practice all modules. You can follow these study plans given in our blog related to Canadian PR if you have that much time. However, the most important thing to is that you must follow it every day.

Step 3: Start IELTS classes

If your score requirement is high and you have a short time to prepare for the test, then you must take online IELTS preparation classes. This way, you will be able to learn all the important aspects of the exam that allow us to achieve higher bands in IELTS GT, and you will not have to worry about resources or anything. By the time you complete your IELTS preparation classes, you will be well-prepared to take the exam with confidence.

7. Conclusion

Booking the IELTS exam is quite an easy process; what’s difficult is when it comes to preparation. For that, you need to practice rigorously while focusing on your weaknesses and strengths. Therefore, you have to be confident and practice enough that you get your desired scores on the first attempt.
